Marvin Joseph Dequaine , 79, of Algoma, passed away with his family by his side at Aurora Hospital on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 after a courageous 19 year battle with MDS. He was born on March 3, 1936 in Rosiere, WI to the late William and Louise (Massart) Dequaine. He graduated from Casco High School in 1953. Marvin was very proud to have served his country in the United States Army in Korea. Upon his return from the service, Marvin married Janet Tassoul on November 29, 1958 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Algoma. In his earlier years, Marvin's work experiences included cheese making, truck driving, carpentry and mill work. Marvin's career choice led him to join the Algoma Police Force in 1972. Simultaneously, he attended Fox Valley Technical College and obtained an Associates Degree in Police Science. He was promoted to Chief of Police for the City of Algoma in 1987 until his retirement in October of 1996. After retirement he worked as a checkpoint supervisor for a short period of time at Austin Straubel Airport. He was the Commander of the Amvets Post 42 since 1990, he served as Third District Commander for two years and was Commander of the Algoma Honor Guard. Most important to Marvin was spending time with his family and grandchildren sharing with them his love of hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife Janet of 57 years; he is further survived by his five children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, Wendy (Mark Zastrow) Dequaine of Algoma and daughter Heather (Barry) Doering of Green Bay--great-grandchildren, Emily, Cadence and Urijah; Kathy Dequaine of Mesa, AZ; Amy (Jim) Benesh and daughter Hailey of Sturgeon Bay; Shelly (Eric) Englebert and children, Brock and Payton of Brussels; and Chad (Jenny) Dequaine and children, Cora, Tyler and Clara of Neenah; two sisters Geri (Dick) Wessel of De Pere; and Darlene VanDrisse of Pardeeville; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Carol Karas of Sturgeon Bay; Judy (Arlen) Wery of Algoma; Ron (Sandy) Tassoul of Luxemburg; Linda (Wally) Karnopp of Sturgeon Bay; and Terry (Sharon) Tassoul of Casco; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Louise Dequaine; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Louie and Jennie Tassoul; three grandsons Parker and Porter Englebert, and Tristan Dequaine; a brother and sister-in-law Alvin (Rosie) Tassoul; and two brothers-in-law Wayne Karas, and Sherman VanDrisse.
Visitation will be held at Wiesner & Massart Funeral Home, 1617 Flora Avenue, Algoma on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 4 to 8 P.M. A Veteran's Service will be held at 6 P.M. and a prayer service at 7 P.M. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 from 9 to 11 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Algoma. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 A.M. with Fr. Ron Columbo officiating. Full military rites will take place at the church.
