Elizabeth Schleis MacSwain

Elizabeth (Leo) Schleis MacSwain, 99, of Kewaunee passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, at home with her family by her side. She was born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland on February 20, 1925, to the late Jack and Ellen (Burke) Leo. At 17 she completed her nurse’s training and traveled to London during World War II to work in a hospital. She became a war bride in 1944 when she married Joseph Schleis, a yank from Kewaunee, in London England. After the war, she came to America aboard the Queen Mary.

Joseph preceded her in death on October 6, 1987. Betty later married Don MacSwain on September 1, 1991. Don preceded her in death on November 10, 2009. Elizabeth was also preceded in death by her daughter Jackie Yon; her sister Kathleen; her brothers John and Patrick.

Betty is survived by her children Patrick Schleis, Sandra Schleis-Ulmen, and Joe (Sue) Schleis; grandchildren, Karissa and Alex (Stephanie) Ulmen, Kaitlyn and Ryan Schleis; great grandson, Connor Ulmen; sister, Aileen Koch; and her son-in-law, Philip Yon. She is further survived by her nieces and nephews Kevin (Cathy) Koch, Wendy (Jeffrey) Hoffman, Maureen (David) Bergh, and Kathleen (Thorsten) Koch.
