Edie A. Vandervest, 93, Algoma, passed away on November 10, 2023, at Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay. She was born on February 6, 1930, to the late Edward J. and Leone (Makovec) Marek. On June 29, 1948, she married the love of her life, Marvin “Red” Vandervest at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Casco. They were married for 71 years before he preceded her in death in 2019.

Edie was a hard worker, having worked for 10 years at Katch’s Department Store as their bookkeeper, 15 years at Algoma Memorial Hospital / Long-term Care as their bookkeeper and supervisor of the business office, also at the Algoma Label Company and selling Avon for 26 years.

Edie found great happiness in having 4 wonderful children, the birth of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the joy of having everyone over for Christmas and other occasions, and the joy of all the motorcycle trips with Red and overnight gambling trips with great friends.

Edie is survived by her children Joan (Dennis) Captain, Mark (Nancy) Vandervest, Nancy Novotny, and “son” Robert Novotny Sr.; grandchildren Amy (Al) Wery, Jim (Cassandra) Captain, Wade (Jodi) Vandervest, Ryan (Lyndsay) Vandervest, Tyler (Casey) Vandervest, Troy Vandervest, Jennifer (Kevin) Cardinal, Robert (Emily) Novotny Jr., and Tracy (Jessica) Novotny; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley, Amber Wery, and Abby (Doug) Craanen; Julia and Grant Vandervest; Dylan and Gavin Vandervest; Hattie and Max Vandervest; Andree, Noah, and Eli Cardinal; and Hank(Robert III), Tommy, Luke Novotny, Jonathan Novotny, and Liana Captain; sister-in-law, Lucille Springgate; as well as nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Ed and Leone Marek; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Mary Vandervest; son Bruce Vandervest; grandson Brian Vandervest; and brother, Maynard (Alicia) Marek, sister, Sandy (Dick) Linskens; also preceded by brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Visitation will take place at St. Peter Catholic Church, Lincoln on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 9:00 to 11:00.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. with Father Rex Palaya officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Kinnard Funeral and Cremation Services - Casco is assisting the family. Online condolence messages may be shared at KinnardFCS.com.
