David J. Mastalir, 65, of Kewaunee, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 8, 2024. He was born January 13, 1959, to Catherine and the late Edward Mastalir. Dave was born and raised in Kewaunee. He attended school at Holy Rosary and Kewaunee High School. Dave's work ethic kept him busy, and he was in high demand to help cut lawns, bail hay, and anything that required a strong spirit, and no fear of getting the job done. This can-do-will-do attitude brought him into the plumbing business as an apprentice at Ed Szydelo Plumbing.
While living in Green Bay, Dave met Margo. They dated for 10 years and were married on October 4, 1996. Together, they enjoyed rock n' roll concerts, water skiing, and sharing stories and drinks with friends. They have two children: Benjamin, born in October of 1997 and Matthew, born in August 1999. As a family they were active in local soccer leagues, where Dave could be seen cheering on the sidelines at every game. They also enjoyed family vacations to amusement parks, water parks, and nearby lakes, as well as road trips and rafting.
Dave and family moved back to Kewaunee in 1998, where Dave opened his own plumbing business, Mastalir Plumbing. Through his 20 plus years of owning/operating this plumbing business, Dave met what feels like just about every single person in town. Dave's work always was driven by the motto passed on to him by his father "Do a job well enough to put your name on it" and his own motto "Plumb for Fun!" His first priority was always to his customers. Dave would answer calls on nights, holidays, and weekends and be ready to come fix the issue right away. Many businesses and homes will carry a reminder of Dave with his name and number written on their water heaters, softeners, walls, and pipes.
Outside of work, Dave had a true passion for fishing. You would find him out in any weather as long as the fish were biting. Dave's family and friends enjoyed his hobby as well, as it always provided a bountiful dinner. He also enjoyed motorcycle riding with Margo, playing cards with family and friends, and spending time with his boys. His competitive energy, ability to razz every person he met, and form a lasting bond with any person made him a staple of the Kewaunee Community for his entire life.
Dave is survived by Margo, his wife of 28 years; his two children, Benjamin (Abby Joski) Mastalir, Matthew (Marisa Skajewski) Mastalir; six brothers, John Mastalir, Paul (Helen) Mastalir, Steve Mastalir, Dan (Jan Lindberg) Mastalir, Peter (Dennis Bartley) Mastalir, Andrew (Betty Jo) Mastalir; two sisters, Mary Szpara, Ann (Rick Linssen) Jahnke; brothers-in-law Greg Lipovac, Bruce Lipovac; sister-in-law Kathy (Bruce) Schmitz; nephews and nieces; his mother, Catherine Mastalir; and mother-in-law Agatha Lipovac.
Dave was preceded in death by his father Edward "Fred" Mastalir; father-in-law Raymond Lipovac; brothers-in-law Mike Szpara, Mike Lipovac; and sister-in-law Lynn Mastalir.
