Carl A. Smidel, a devoted dairy farmer and hardworking fitter, passed away on October 24, 2023, in his home state of Wisconsin. Born on January 6, 1952, to the late Charles and Lillian (Repitz) Smidel, Carl was a simple man who lived a simple life, embodying qualities of patience and humor.
Growing up in a farming family, Carl developed a deep love for the land and all its creatures. It was not uncommon to see raccoons and skunks making themselves at home on his porch, sharing food with the family cats. He had a special affinity for animals and found great joy in their presence.
Hunting also held a special place in Carl's heart. However, in his later years, he derived as much pleasure from observing the deer as he did from participating in the hunt itself. During his last hunting trip, Carl was thrilled to witness around 30 deer pass by him without firing a single shot. To him, it was not about the kill but about seeing how close the deer would come to him.
Aside from his passions for farming and hunting, Carl enjoyed working with his hands. He enjoyed fixing and welding old antique machinery, restoring them to their former glory.
Carl's dedication extended beyond his personal pursuits into his chosen professions. He proudly worked as a fitter at Bay Ship for 14 years while simultaneously tending to his responsibilities as a dairy farmer. This dual commitment epitomized his strong work ethic.
Carl's passing leaves a void in the hearts of his surviving family and friends. He will be lovingly remembered by his brother Leonard Smidel, brother Norbert (Kim) Smidel, sister Winnie Janda, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Lillian Smidel, his brother Richard Smidel, his sister Mable (Joe) Kinjerski, and sister-in-law Jacqueline Smidel and brother-in-law Roger Janda.
